Biography & Personal Statement
Melody Freed is a sophomore from Laurel, Maryland studying History at the University of Maryland. She is interested in history, music, film and film scoring, as well as photography and pop culture. She aims to research the history of these topics to see how they are all connected and how they have influenced one another over time. Her experience in music includes a decade of playing the clarinet, participating in marching band, and playing piano and ukulele. Her focus in history is on the story and foundations of the United States, specifically throughout the 1900s. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in History, Melody plans to work with history and music as much as possible, and intends to work with a museum or a non-profit historical organization in the DC area.
As a College Park Arts Scholar, Melody plans to continue to research her interests through her culminating Capstone project, which is to be completed in her sophomore year of college. She looks forward to completing her Pentathlon and Tryathlon, as well as going on field trips and taking advantage of the arts programs and opportunities located throughout the University of Maryland campus and the greater College Park community. She is involved in music and research groups at the University, and intends to spread her knowledge of her interests with the rest of the community in any way possible. Academically, Melody plans on graduating with a strong GPA and notable involvement, and hopes to be able to serve the community in a way that will continue to nurture her interest in history and the interests of the people around her.
