Music and 1960s America

Abstract

Alongside important historical events such as the Civil Rights Movement, protests against the Vietnam War, the rise of counterculture among adolescents, and the assassinations of political figures such as President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy,  throughout the 1960s was a shifting music scene in the United States. The 1960s were full of tremendous music and plenty to write about, making it a good time period to focus my research on. Through the medium of a magazine which will include mock interviews, articles, and case studies, my project will aim to showcase the connections between important historical events and the music that coexisted with them. My project will be significant in that it will include a lot of information about a lot of different aspects of American history and through its portrayal of music’s relationship to the culture of the 1960s. It will be a mesh of research into different subject matters, like different musicians, songs, and the political, social, and economic aspects of American society. The main artistic methods I’ll be utilizing during this project are writing and bookbinding. My ultimate goals for this project are to provide knowledge and information to my audience about the historical significance of specific music and musicians in relation to the turmoil of the United States in the 1960s; to showcase my passion for history, and to approach certain topics in our history from the perspective of music; and to strengthen my writing skills and my bookbinding skills.
